Ageing causes thinning of the major skin layers and a loss of elastic tissue in the dermis. The result is the appearance of small dilated blood vessels known as telangiectasias. The formation of telangiectasias is also promoted by sun damage, over-use of steroid ("cortisone") creams and other chronic skin problems.
Rosacea is a chronic skin flushing over the nose, chin, forehead and cheeks, the cause of which is unknown. Patients may develop telangiectasias and increased tissue covering the nose, known as rhinophyma.
The Aurora® Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) or the Polaris® Laser with radio frequency (RF) energy and skin cooling may be used to target the abnormal vessels in the face and legs. The combination of light and RF causes selective damage to the lining of the vessels, removing the telangietasias. The normal skin is protected by the selective targeting of the blood vessels and skin cooling.
The treatment of choice for Rosacea patients with telangiectasias and rhinophyma is laser therapy using equipment such as the Polaris with RF energy and skin cooling.
Treatment with the laser or IPL is a painless process.
The physicians at the Aesthetic Medicine of New Hampshire Center will discuss the treatment options during your consultation.
