Acne Treatment Using Light

Services Available Acne, a well known dermatological problem, can occur in any age group, but is most common and severe during the adolescent years. The "pimples" are caused by a blockage of the oil-secreting glands, which become secondarily infected. It is the infection of the gland that causes the skin damage. The severity of acne is quite variable, from a few isolated "pimples", to "white heads/black heads", to the severe "nodular-pustular" variety leading to eventual scarring. In addition, Acne may have emotional aspects, particularly during the teenage years.

Many patients respond slowly to the many medically-approved creams and long-term antibiotics. In recent years Accutane has become the mainstay treatment of resistant nodular-pustular acne. Unfortunately, all of the medications, in particular Accutane, have potential side-effects.

Now, there is a new approved light treatment for acne, narrow-spectrum blue light, a part of the Syneron Aurora skin-care system. The light therapy causes destruction of the bacteria responsible for the infection and inflammation. Repair of the damaged tissue can then proceed naturally to minimize or prevent scarring. The course of therapy is a total of 8 treatments over a 4-week period. Studies have shown an improvement in 80% of patients undergoing light treatment.

Patients are not candidates for the light therapy if they have taken Accutane within the past 3 months.
